Tinnitus Treatment

Tinnitus, a condition that is often associated with hearing loss, is often described as a “hissing, ringing, or buzzing sound” in your ears, which no one else can hear. It may be constant or intermittent. Like hearing loss, everyone experiences tinnitus symptoms differently.

The two main causes of tinnitus are:

  • Acoustic trauma – exposure to loud sounds.
  • Presbycusis – hearing loss caused by aging can be accompanied by tinnitus.

Other causes include: impacted cerumen (earwax), viral infections, stokes, ototoxic medications, changes in environmental pressure, as well as frequent ear infections. For most people, tinnitus comes and goes, and doesn’t require treatment. However, if you’re experiencing constant symptoms that interfere with your quality of life, you need to be evaluated.

At Lemme Audiology Associates, located in Altoona, Pennsylvania, we’ve been providing hearing solutions since 1988. We understand that tinnitus can cause a devastating cycle of increased stress, sleep deprivation, depression and social isolation. Our compassionate staff wishes to help you break that cycle.

We start with an auditory assessment which includes questions about your medical history, including possible family history of hearing loss or tinnitus, your history of exposure to loud noises, as well as a list of medications. Our goal in your tinnitus treatment is to help identify the underlying cause, and if possible, eliminate it. We also offer pitch and volume testing to determine the exact pitch, volume and frequency of your symptoms. If a medical cause cannot be determined, we offer management options to help make living with tinnitus easier.

Some tinnitus treatment options include one or more of the following:

We carry the Widex Zen. This newer tinnitus treatment device which works to decrease the stress and frustration by using barely audible chime-like tones to help make the ringing, buzzing or humming sounds less noticeable. This often helps reduce stress and allow you to manage your tinnitus better. The Zen is available with various settings and six different tones which we can customize to your personal preferences.

  • Hearing aids – Because tinnitus often accompanies hearing loss, the use of hearing aids can help by enhancing the sounds you want to hear and masking (or covering) the ringing sensation.

At Lemme Audiology Associates, we look forward to improving your quality of life through tinnitus treatment. We serve the residents of Altoona, Pennsylvania and the surrounding areas in Blair County.
